The Icon
Look at the below image of the icons of Apple, Nike, McDonald’s. These are bold and abstract. I hope you know about them, but imagine if you have no idea about any of them.
Can you recognize that the apple logo represents a company that sells smartphones and gadgets? The Nike logo doesn’t explicitly convey anything about sports, and McDonald’s big yellow “M” says nothing about food. No, you and I definitely do not.
We cannot really relate to them if we did not know and understand what type of products or services these big corporations sell. Only because these companies are huge today so we can understand what they do.
But if you are new and just starting out, then going after just an icon can be a little bit of a bold move because normally the icon does not have many details to tell about your brand.
So it can be hard for your customers to remember and relate to your brand by your logo. By an icon unless you have done something significant.
Wordmark Logo
The next type of logo is the wordmark logo, something like Facebook, Coca-Cola, or FedEx. The wordmark logo features your brand’s name with some customized fonts.
A wordmark does not incorporate symbols, icons, or graphic elements; instead, it focuses on the distinctive design of the typography itself. The goal of the wordmark logo is to create a visually appealing and memorable representation of the brand through the unique arrangement, style, of the brand’s name.
Moreover, wordmarks are generally used for simplicity in the logo, which helps convey the brand’s message effectively and makes it easier for the audience to recognize and remember the brand by its logo. This type of logo can be used easily across all different platforms.
Lattermark
A Lettermark is also known as a monogram logo. Lengthy names cannot be used in wordmarks, so a lettermark is an option to create a logo from the initial letters or acronym of the name, as you can see in the logos of HP (Hewlett-Packard), Under Armour, and HBO (Home Box Office).
As shown in the image below, all these brand names are hard to pronounce for all people and are lengthy when called by their full names. So lettermark logos can be used effectively in such cases. Generally, brands use lettermark logos to achieve effective recognition of their brand names.
The Combination
The next type of logos is combination logos, where they incorporate both text and icons, or you can say it’s a mixture of an icon and a wordmark logo, just like the brand logo in the image below. The goal is to create a unique and compelling logo where the text and icon complement each other.
You can recognize them just by looking at their icon and also with their unique fonts.
Combination logos are versatile and can be used with either the logo or the name and both together like Adidas with its name and also with its logo.
However, the concerning part here is, let’s say if you have a certain audience and they are used to your icon, so it is hard for them to recognize you with your wordmark and it can be quite confusing for them.
The Emblem
Emblems are logos typically where the company name is enclosed within a symbol or icon. This style often gives a traditional and formal appearance.
Emblems feature an unified design as you can see in the below image. This creates a cohesive and often enclosed visual look.
Emblems are generally used for traditional and historical vibes. If you want to establish a strong, classic, formal, reliable brand, then you can go with an emblem.

You can choose a template or click on “create a design” for your logo. After selecting the template or design, you can start customizing it and you can add different fonts, colors, and shapes according to your needs.

Now that you are all set, you can create your business logo with the help of Shopify in 8 simple steps. You can explore many types of logos and choose one that fits your needs.
Shopify gives you access to different types of logos, and you can also customize a logo, such as color, shape, and other important elements for creating a logo.
